Note 01

What is Python programming?

Programming development covers the main layers of a web application: the frontend that users interact with, the backend that processes requests, and the database that stores information.

  • Programming concepts: HTML structures content, CSS styles it, and JavaScript adds browser interactions.
  • Problem solving: Python handles business rules, validation, authentication and application logic.
  • Data handling: SQL databases store structured records and relationships.
  • APIs: Interfaces that allow software components to exchange data.

Typical request flow

Input is received → the program processes data and applies logic → functions perform tasks → output is displayed or saved to a file.

Note 02

Python fundamentals

Python is a general-purpose programming language known for readable syntax. Indentation is meaningful, so keep code blocks consistently indented.

name = "Ravi"
score = 82

if score >= 40:
    result = "Pass"
else:
    result = "Try again"

print(f"{name}: {result}")

Remember

  • Use descriptive variable names such as total_price.
  • Use if / elif / else for branching and for or while for repetition.
  • Convert input to the expected type when needed, such as int(input(...)).
  • Test boundary cases and read error messages carefully.
Note 03

Functions and collections

Functions package a task into a reusable unit. Collections help store related values and retrieve them efficiently.

def calculate_total(price, quantity):
    return price * quantity

cart = [199, 299, 150]
print(sum(cart))
print(calculate_total(250, 3))

student = {"name": "Asha", "score": 91}
print(student["name"])
  • List: ordered, mutable collection.
  • Tuple: ordered, typically immutable collection.
  • Set: collection of unique values.
  • Dictionary: key-value pairs.
  • Keep functions focused and return values rather than relying on unnecessary global state.
Note 04

Object-oriented programming and exceptions

Classes define a structure; objects are instances of that structure. Exception handling lets a program respond to expected errors without failing unpredictably.

class Course:
    def __init__(self, title, duration):
        self.title = title
        self.duration = duration

    def summary(self):
        return f"{self.title} - {self.duration}"

course = Course("Python Programming", "Course duration as confirmed by RK Technology")
print(course.summary())

try:
    number = int("25")
except ValueError:
    print("Please enter a valid number")

Use classes when they clarify related data and behaviour. Catch specific exceptions, and avoid silently ignoring errors.

Note 05

HTML, CSS and JavaScript essentials

HTML provides meaning and structure, CSS controls presentation, and JavaScript responds to user actions in the browser.

<form id="contact-form">
  <label for="email">Email</label>
  <input id="email" type="email" required>
  <button type="submit">Submit</button>
</form>

<script>
document.querySelector("#contact-form")
  .addEventListener("submit", (event) => {
    event.preventDefault();
    alert("Form captured for demo");
  });
</script>
  • Use semantic HTML and connect labels to form controls.
  • Use CSS Flexbox or Grid for layout and media queries for responsiveness.
  • Validate input in the browser for convenience, then validate again on the server.
  • Do not put secrets or private credentials in frontend code.
Note 06

How a Python web framework works

A framework provides structure for URLs, request handling, templates, forms and data access. Django and Flask are common Python options; choose the framework specified by your course.

  1. Define a URL route for a page or endpoint.
  2. Receive the request in a view or handler.
  3. Validate parameters and apply application logic.
  4. Read or update data through a database layer when required.
  5. Return an HTML page or structured API response.

Good habits

Separate presentation from business logic, keep configuration outside source code, use virtual environments, record dependencies and never trust incoming form data automatically.

Note 07

SQL, databases and CRUD

CRUD stands for Create, Read, Update and Delete. Most data-driven apps use these operations to manage records.

-- Example SQL statements
SELECT id, name, email FROM students;

INSERT INTO students (name, email)
VALUES ('Asha', 'asha@example.com');

UPDATE students
SET name = 'Asha R.'
WHERE id = 1;

DELETE FROM students
WHERE id = 1;

Use parameterised queries or the framework’s safe ORM methods to avoid SQL injection. Add suitable keys and constraints, validate data, and be especially careful with destructive operations.

Note 08

APIs, authentication and web security

An API exposes a defined interface for clients to request or submit data. REST-style APIs commonly use HTTP methods such as GET, POST, PUT/PATCH and DELETE and often exchange JSON.

MethodTypical use
GETRetrieve a resource
POSTCreate or submit data
PUT / PATCHReplace or partially update a resource
DELETERemove a resource when authorised
  • Validate all incoming data on the server.
  • Use framework-supported password hashing and authentication.
  • Keep API keys and database credentials out of public repositories.
  • Use HTTPS in production and apply access checks to protected resources.
  • Return useful status codes without exposing stack traces or sensitive details.
Note 09

Git, testing and deployment

  1. Initialise: Create a repository and add a clear README.
  2. Commit: Save small, meaningful changes with descriptive messages.
  3. Branch: Develop a feature separately and merge after review.
  4. Test: Check normal inputs, invalid inputs, empty states and permissions.
  5. Configure: Set environment variables and production settings.
  6. Deploy: Publish to a suitable host and verify logs, routes and database access.
  7. Maintain: Update dependencies carefully, monitor errors and back up important data.
